What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small file that a website saves in your browser to remember something between pages. Some are saved by the website itself; others by companies whose services appear on the page, such as Google in advertising.
The categories we use
- Essentials — They keep the site running securely and protect your choice in the consent notice. They cannot be disabled by the site.
- Preference — They remind you of the language in which you read the website.
- Measurement — They count visits and page views in aggregate, so we know which guides are being read.
- Advertising — recorded by Google (Google Ad Manager and AdSense) and its partners, such as the __gads and __gpi cookies on the website's domain and the IDE on the doubleclick.net domain. They are used to display ads, limit repetition, and, when you allow it, personalize what appears.
- Meta campaign measurement — When the Meta Pixel loads, it may record the _fbp cookie to measure the Facebook and Instagram ads that brought you here.
How to control cookies
- In the browser: All browsers allow you to view, block, and delete cookies in your privacy settings. Blocking essential cookies may break parts of the website.
- In the consent notice: Those accessing from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland choose what they accept on their first visit. To change your choice, delete the cookies from this site and the warning will reappear.
- On Google: Turn off customization in Google Ads Settings.
- In Goal: Adjust how your data is used in the ad preferences of your Facebook or Instagram account.
Refusing advertising cookies doesn't make the ads disappear: they continue to appear, chosen based on the page's subject matter and not your browsing history.
